On June 9, the University of South Africa (UNISA) hosted a lecture by D.A. Zelenova, Head of the BRICS African Strategy Research Center at the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IAS RAS), titled “Strengthening African Agency in BRICS: Can the Participation of African States Enhance Multipolarity?” In her address, Zelenova highlighted South Africa’s pivotal role in the bloc as a key driver of the Pan-African agenda. She also discussed initiatives and projects launched during Russia’s latest BRICS chairmanship, which aim to bolster African sovereignty and political agency.


The discussion was moderated by South African history professor Sifiso M. Ndlovu. Other speakers included Professor Boitumelo Senokoane, Executive Director of the Institutional Advancement Department at the University of South Africa, and Mr. Nkosinathi Mabilane, President of the University’s Student Council. Following the lecture, an extended Q&A session and discussion took place, during which students demonstrated a strong grasp of international affairs and expressed keen interest in further exploring Russia-Africa foreign policy relations.
