On April 1, 2026, the Centre for African Strategy in BRICS at the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences hosted expert discussions with the participation of Professor Bakail Moncef, Director of the Laboratory for African Studies, and Dr. Abed Soufiane, researcher at the same laboratory (University of Algiers 2, Algeria). The discussions focused on the BRICS dimension in the system of foreign policy coordinates of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
During the meeting, the Center’s staff and their Algerian colleagues discussed the African vector of Algeria’s foreign policy, with particular emphasis on the country’s historically close ties with the Republic of South Africa, a BRICS member state. Professor B. Moncef shared his views on the prospects for the development of integration processes on the African continent and on Algeria’s role as one of the region’s leaders. In addition, the participants examined in detail the role of BRICS in the emerging multipolar world order and the significance of the grouping in the context of the growing agency of the countries of the Global South. In light of Algeria’s accession to the BRICS New Development Bank (NDB) in 2025, Professor B. Moncef outlined the priority issues on the country’s development agenda and the potential sectors for attracting NDB financing. Special attention was also given to the potential for further development of the Russian-Algerian strategic partnership.
