Daria Zelenova, PhD in Political Science and and Head of the Centre for African Strategy in BRICS, took part in a new episode of the “Mama Africa” programme devoted to one of the continent’s most unusual countries — Lesotho.
The programme explored the history and contemporary realities of the kingdom: from the participation of 20,000 Basotho people in the Second World War to today’s challenges in the areas of food security and employment.
Special attention was paid to the impact of Donald Trump’s policies on Lesotho’s economy, the country’s efforts to develop ties with Russia, China and other non-Western partners, as well as the prospects for Russian-Lesotho cooperation.
Why is this country called the “Kingdom in the Sky” and even “the Switzerland of Africa”? How did it happen that Southern Africa’s only ski resort is located there? Why are Lesotho’s water resources of strategic importance to South Africa? How is the identity of Lesotho’s people transforming under new international conditions? What position does the kingdom take when voting on key UN resolutions?
